a weekend of togetherness

this past weekend was wonderful.  it was one of those, wake-up-to-birds-chirping-and-not-your-alarm, kind of weekends.  basically, the kind of weekend i wish existed every weekend.

let me just say, the light that floods our bedroom in the back of our long condo could not be more inviting if it tried.  our cozy little bed pushed up right next to the wall of open windows makes us feel like we are sleeping in a tree house each night.  the rustle of the trees are but a few inches away, and tiny buds the color of caterpillars are forming rather gracefully.

along with the relaxing mornings that greeted us, we got quite familiar with the park, or "our backyard" as we like to call it.  upon moving to our new home, the location was one thing that really appealed to us.  if we were going to sacrifice having our very own backyard, we wanted to make sure there would be a park within walking distance.  loose park, one of kansas city's finest, just happens to be a stones throw away.  we are so smitten with its allure: the happy park-goers, gushing fountains, gorgeous tulips, a lush rose garden that blooms in early august, and the "dacks" that stella likes to feed and converse with.  recently we found out, that like us, they are quite fond of brittish muffins from trader joes.  what good taste those plaza duckies have!

let's talk about pizza for a minute, shall we?  andrew and i are always on the hunt for a good margherita pizza pie.  every now and then i make my own, but it does not compare to the magic of a wood-burning stove, which sadly, but obviously, we do not have in our itty bitty galley kitchen.  with rumbling tummies we stumbled upon a pizza place right on the plaza called coal vines.  our love for spin down the street, pizza bella in the crossroads, and blue grotto in brookside have kept us coming back and have made other pizza places seem somewhat inferior.  we gave this new (to us) place a go and were left very, very satisfied.

the paper thin crust that was not too doughy but crunchy in all the right places.  it was topped with crushed italian tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella, fresh basil, roasted garlic, and lots of black pepper.  upon our first smell as it made its way to our table, we were both immediately transported us back to our travels in eastern italy, specifically venice, when we ate a simple tomato pizza next to the grand canal watching the gondolas casually stroll by.  it stirred up memories of exotic experiences abroad and made us instant lovers of this corner cafe.  stella ate an entire piece, and even made up an ode to our new favorite pie that went something like,

"pizzzaaa..pizzaaa....pieeeee...one..two....theee!"

as if this late lunch on saturday could not get any better, there were leftovers for sunday.  and we all know how wonderful eating leftover pizza curled up on the couch watching a new episode of the walking dead is, am i right?

by the way, we just got into this zombie show (i detest gore and, well, zombieish stuff) and happen to be hooked.  admittedly, i am not thrilled with my new-found love for zombie apocalypse shows, but will embrace it because put frankly, this show is bad ass.

in addition to our pizza euphoria, our tummies also indulged in birch beer for the first time.  being pregnant and all, i was drawn to this beautiful bubbly non-alcoholic, non-caffiene drink at the market the other day.  it tastes somewhere in between a really good root beer with a little ginger and vanilla added for good measure.  we highly recommend it if you love either of those flavors.  i know i will be sipping on some this afternoon, preferably on our patio as the sun fades into the trees.

i must not gloss over one of the highlights of our weekend.  thanks to some great (and very kind) friends, andrew and i got to see the black keys live, and in a suite nonetheless!  this concert was one i had always wanted to see, as in at the top of my live band list.  it truly went beyond anything we could have imagined and left us rocking in our seats the whole drive home.  if you ever get a chance to see patrick and dan rock out on stage, do so.  please.  no matter the price.  it was so, so brilliantly awesome.  i am sure our little bun in my cozy oven was head-banging in there.  i could just sense it.  :)

oh, and we had noodles at lulus before hand, which makes the perfect prelude to any concert in our opinion.  go there on sunday for all day happy hour prices.  it's pretty darn good.  we always get the satay, dumplings, green curry noodles, and fire cracker shrimp.  if you are lucky enough to sit outside, you won't regret it.

in all, this was a weekend i wish i could bottle up forever.  we slept well, ate well, played hard, explored often, and rocked out.  a perfect combination of fun, i'd say.  i suppose that's what 80 degree weather allows one to do.  later this week is supposed to bring bouts of spring rain, which will give us an excuse to watch more game of thrones and fold that pile of laundry in the corner that has been staring us down for about a week.  and maybe with the rain, will come more snuggles on the couch and possibly some cheddar ale soup.  we love a good cheddar ale soup, and i think i just might have all the ingredients in our fridge to whip some up.

i shall leave you for now with a smile and wish that you make the best of these beautiful spring days ahead.  we are blessed to be able to enjoy them together, because being together is what makes them beautiful.

we gave thanks

andrew and i held up our holiday tradition and hosted thanksgiving for both sides of our families this year in our new itty bitty 2 bedroom home.  it was really wonderful and cozy, if you ask me.  everyone we love was there under one roof, walking across our creaky floors, taking turns pouring wine, offering one another yet another scotch-a-roo (my mom's famous recipe), and getting their fare share of slobbery smooches from a puckered up stella who was most definitely in the giving mood.

that chalkboard up there was written on by andrew, who was adorably giddy when i got home with a new box of chalk from the craft store.  surprisingly he asked, "can i be in charge of the quote for thanksgiving?"  i melted.  and of course squealed, "yes!"

lets move on from me gushing about my man and discuss's dinner, shall we?  this family dinner had everything you could imagine for dinner...all harry potter style (or at least that's how it was in my mind) with the traditional bird covered a crispy citrus salt, spicy sausage and fennel stuffing, sweet potato pie ala marshmallows, mashed red potatoes, green bean and mushroom casserole, sweet rolls, chipotle cranberry sauce, seven layer salad, and homemade turkey gravy.

our bellies are still full from all those holiday treats and are happy for having been fed very well.

last year for thanksgiving, stella had her very first bite of solid food.  it was really precious and quite appropriate having her milestone of eating solids on one of my favorite days EVER- centered around food of course.  as for this year, she devoured everything right down to the itty bitty pieces of cranberries strewn all over her plate, making her mama proud.  that's two for two little one!  and we found out she likes stuffing a lot too, as evident from her many leftover meals consisting of the reheated side-dish.

after eating and stretching our forgiving waste bands, we went down to the plaza to watch the ever so famous lighting, where we counted down and hugged each other tight as the fireworks and christmas lights ushered in the holiday season.

*note: fireworks in november are always a good idea.

then we scooted on back to have some pie, more wine, and laughs.  thanksgiving was very good to us this year, and we are thankful for that!  and in case you were wondering, most of our family pictures look like this...

tired, squirmy babes make picture time fuuuun.  ;)

museum walkabout

a few days ago, baby girl and i went on a museum walkabout.  it was one of those summer afternoons where there were no plans in the works and we just needed to get out the house for a bit to stretch our legs and open our minds.  after filling our bellies for lunch we ventured off to explore the nelson's sculpture park, some glorious paintings, and all that awaited us.  it was her, i, a stroller, and some water.  all the essentials for a superb walkabout.

there was a solar powered instillation that had an outdoor room created out of chalkboard paint.  stella and i sat on the floor and covered ourselves in chalk dust, leaving our mark in various shapes, lines, and squiggles.  i can not get over how well she was holding that piece of chalk.  such a determined little turkey, indeed!   she knew its purpose and intended on making some art, having watched her mama doodle nearby.  my baby is growing up.

we had fun roaming around the museum's grounds, following paths we have never been down, and going through doors that welcomed us into new, unfamiliar spaces.  the air was hot, heavy, and humid so we decided it would be best to go pay a visit to our dear friends indoors:  monet, van gogh, gauguin, and lautrec.  but only because it was hot.  ;)

as we walked around looking at these masterpieces stella spotted a "puppa" so we had to go say hello.  the bright colors in gauguin's painted attracted her wandering eye and prompted a tiny finger to point in the air.  that moment made me so proud as a mama.  it's amazing seeing the spark go off and connections being made in your baby's eyes.  she is learning and having a beautiful experience that is shaping her as a little human and future woman of the world.  i don't think i will ever forget her little finger pointing at the puppa that day.

on our way out, we had a chat with the thinker, rodin being my husband's favorite sculptor, and come to think of it favorite artist, before heading for the shade on the pathway near the exit.  there we sat and baby girl had one thing on her mind: hugs for mama.  a perfect end to a museum walkabout, if you ask me.  i encourage you to visit your city's local museum{s} and soak up all that culture with your wee one!

mama's day

my very first mama's day was a wonderful one indeed!  i am so blessed to be this baby's mama.  our day together started off pretty swell.  my lovely mister let me sleep in while he made breakfast for his ladies - scrambled eggs with cheese per request of stell who has been loving them lately.  when i woke up i was greeted with a warm plate of food, a card with two love letters, pink roses, my new favorite perfume, aaaaand a clean kitchen!  husband sure knows what this mama appreciates, and those letters alone made my day.  after laying around getting attacked with numerous kisses by baby girl, we ventured off to the nelson-atkins museum park for the afternoon.

in the midst of many families we had a lemonade picnic, and did lots people watching.  there was a man doing flips,  many kiddos running around chasing each other, and good lordy, families just kept on comin' droves!  they all seemed to be having fun playing games, reading, and laughing with one another.  it was neat to see all the love out there.  it was baby girl's first time to this park, and like all outdoor places, she loved every second of it, even getting brave enough to sit in the grass all by herself!  well, only for a few seconds...but we are getting there people!  spread out on our tiny quilt, we also tried on each other's sun glasses which gave baby girl a few giggles.  that photo of stella rockin' the shades + her paci is pretty darn cute, if you ask me.  does this remind anyone of carlos, no?  before we left, dada threw her up in the air by the shuttlecock art, and oh, did she squeal!  her little squeal gets me every time, and it's only a squeal her dada can muster.

it is really amazing how this little family of mine continues to make my heart swell.  i hope all mamas, future mamas, mama-in-laws, mama figures, and grandmamas out there had a beautiful day.

cheers to you!
