slowing down

it was sunday morning a few moons back and i was sitting in the nursery of our church feeding my sweet boy.  his warm little body was wrapped around my middle, my arm cradling him tightly.  on the speaker overhead i heard our pastor speak passionately of snow storms and blustery weather and its connection to the beauty in slowing down.

she reminded us that right now as the chilly winter months are getting underway, all of creation is working hard to help us slow our pace so we may reflect on what is truly important in life.  what it is all for, for him and his truth.  for family.  for togetherness. for truly listening to one another and to taking long naps.  nature is giving us a cue, and we must heed and pay careful regard.

i've never really thought of weather in this context, as a deliberate road sign guiding us towards wholeheartedness and peace, but i quite like it.  instead of cursing the cold and blaming the rawness of this season, revel in your opportunity to slow down.

as the flakes begin to accumulate and ice makes its presence known, i will use winter's signs as a gentle reminder to take time in spiritual meditation and to savor the unhurried nature of things inside our little home where it's warm and soup is on a low simmer.

  1. I love this. I'd never thought about bad weather like this before either, but it makes total sense. Up in northern BC our winters can last until April and are always bitterly cold (like -45 cold) and I often find myself overlooking the beauty of this place and just resenting it until spring finally arrives, those winter blues. I'll definitely be reminding myself of these words as the season progresses, thank you.

  2. Wow! What a beautiful prespective - and so very true! I'm not normally a fan of winter, so i'll keep these words with me as my little reminder on these frigid days. Thank you so much for sharing, sweet mama!
