a kansas city weekend

what a delicious weekend this was for us!  the weather could not have been kinder.  it was one of those weekends where you catch yourself mid sip of your favorite sun-brewed ice tea and think to yourself, "hot dang, i like this day!"  

friday night started off with pajamas for everybody and 47th street oklahoma joe's take out.  i got my usual, carolina pork sandwich with a side o' baked beans, and andrew got his usual, the rib dinner.  we also devoured onion rings bathed in sticky BBQ sauce like nobodies business.  living in a BBQ city, i should have a lengthy list of recommendations for you when it comes to smoked meats dipped in brown sugar sauce, but i don't.  i will only and forever recommend ONE place.  and that place makes me purr like a fat cat each and every time because it is that good, my friends.  that good.  before getting our fingers good and messy, we turned on new girl to get our zooey fix.  i say we because we both have thing, well, mad crush per se, on miss 'bangs' deschanel.  she inspired me to get a new pair of glasses from coastal this weekend.  i hope they come soon, i really would like to give my eyes a breather from these month-old contacts.  so friday was amazingly cozy and all around great.  

saturday greeted us in the best of spirits!  i ventured to the brookside farmer's market at 8 am to take advantage of chipotle's insanely good deal going on: $10 market money and BYGO coupon.  i came home arms full of ripe tomatoes for some salsa i plan on canning this week, along with some beautiful green peppers.  i keep going back and forth between canning the tomatoes plain or making salsa, but i think salsa always trumps everything, so salsa it shall be.  i came home to a warm latte and a made bed.  andrew was up and getting ready to go, listening to fleet foxes.  after munching on breakfast we ventured to cameron, missouri to visit shatto farms.  it was the most darling little place and smelled like my grandpa's old farm in iowa.  not the most pleasant smell, but nostalgic in the best of ways.  

upon arrival, we tasted all sorts of milk, including: orange dream, cotton candy, coffee, strawberry, chocolate, and root beer.  we all preferred the root beer milk and thought it tasted like a summery float.  stella got to pet a calf that was born THAT morning, if you can believe it, and see how milk was made by all the black and white mommy cows.  i had the pleasure of putting my finger in the udder sucker thing, which tickled.  we ended our tour with a picnic of shatto cheddar cheese and my peach salsa.  andrew decided to take us through the country fields instead of the interstate home.  it was so lovely.  we winded around little towns and felt the breeze flow through our hair.  the golden hay bails bid us adieu, and we couldn't help but smile.  

we took my sister ali's pupa for a walk early saturday evening around the block in their hood, just a few streets north of us near westport.  we saw three very interesting things in the span of thirty minutes.  1). a potbellied pig named marley being walked on a leash and not too happy about going home, hence very loud snorting. 2). a homeless lady on the steps not whispering but yelling hateful nothings in the air while scratching off a lotto ticket, sipping a 64 oz. something in a bag, and smoking. 3). a loud car accident.  everyone was okay, it was just a bit alarming being that it happened right by us. but both pupas were very pleased with their walk around the museum and behaved quite well. we decided a treat was in order for us three, given we were hot and hungry, so miami ice was the answer.  this summer staple on the westside (volker) makes thee very best ices.  we recommend blue raspberry.  we think it has addictive qualities, but don't mind one bit.  

sunday morning greeted us with grace.  we eased into breakfast and coffee.  we danced in our bedroom.  we all took long showers.  well, one of us a bubbly bath.  and then off to lulu's we went!  lulu's noodle shop is one of our top favorite restaurant's here in kansas city.  i've posted about them here, too.  we always get the green curry (medium) with wide rice noodles and pork, and then try an assortment of their street food.  if you go on sunday, they have excellent prices.  and always choose to sit on their patio.  this is non-negotiable if you have kiddos.  the atmosphere is quaint and there is an alley out back to explore if the little ones get rambunctious, with a supervised adult, please.  we also recommend the thai iced tea, the firecracker shrimp, pork belly salad, spring rolls, and lemongrass meat balls.  but everything is good.  

after getting our fill of thai, we stocked up at costco and bought our first box of newborn diapers, along with size fives for the little lass.  it's really happening you guys!  newborn diapers again, i mean, whoa.  and i know i should be more diligent in potty training stella right now, but she's just not there yet.  hopefully this will be our last box of fives though.  that would be really nice.  after frozen pizza dinner and assorting our new TWO sizes of diapers, we had one long cuddle session before calling it a night well before midnight. it felt good to climb into bed and open the windows.  what a beautiful weekend!  we sure love you, kansas city, and are beyond happy to call you home.
