living small // tip two

tip two: expand your space with lots of white. 

awhile back i wrote my first post about living small.  it highlighted the importance of utilizing wall space for extra storage.  with our ever-expanding family, our space is about to get even smaller, but we wouldn't trade it for anything.  

andrew and i love our tiny space and are smitten with how homey it feels.  each room has a purpose and everything has its place.  despite being a little less than 800 square feet, our home surprisingly feels big to us!  but it didn't feel so large when we first moved in.  all the walls were shades of brown and beige.  it felt cramped, dark, and dirty.  before anything else, we gave each room a fresh coat of paint.  in the rooms with more windows (living/dining room, our bedroom, nursery) we went with very, very light grey and in the kitchen and bathroom we went with a bright white.  

painting everything very light colors was an instant success.  our home felt like it had doubled in size and it felt so much cleaner.  our white crown molding and woodwork looks rather smashing against the light grey while adding subtle depth and warmth to our main living area.  we were blessed that our kitchen cupboards were already painted white, saving us lots of time and paint.  

in addition to painting our space white and light grey, we decided to use a lot of white in other areas of our home as well.  our platform bed frame, bedroom media center, nursery furniture, bedding, and picture frames help add to our refreshing neutral palette.  we have incorporated many natural fibers and wood, along with fun pops of color throughout our home to avoid it feeling too sterile.  after all, we do love texture and color.  

if you have a small space or are unsure of what color to go with regarding a major purchase or paint color, i highly recommend going white.  you are less likely to get bored with the color and your options for accenting are endless.
